タイ南部にある自宅で、久しぶりにこのニュースレターを書いております。仕事柄、芝草に関する興味深い知見、イベント、活動などの情報が集まってきて、見る間に溜まっていきます。そろそろ新しいニュースレターでそうした最新情報をお伝えする時期かと思い立ちました。

最近の出張旅行
コロナ禍のまっ最中はタイ国内での移動が制限された時期もありましたが、この2年間のうちのほとんどはタイ国内での移動は可能でした。
しかし、外国からタイに入国することは難しく、不確実性が高く、したがって相当な費用も覚悟しなければならないという事情があったので、2020年2月に越後湯沢、福岡、東京を経てタイに戻ってからは、今年の3月までずっとタイ国内にとどまっておりました。
そしてこの3月に2年ぶりの国外出張。アイルランドのゴールウェイで開かれたアイルランド緑化推進協議会で講演を行いました。

アイルランドの後は米国に渡り、
• オハイオ州にあるブルックス研究所（ATC が引き受けている土壌分析や葉身分析をやってくれている分析機関です）へ。
• その後、フロリダ大学、ジョージア大学（ティフトンキャンパス）、テネシー大学（私はここの非常勤講師です）を訪れて芝草研究者達と面談。
• 最近のコース管理を見せてもらうためにゴルフ場も訪問。
• マスターズトーナメントのために、オーガスタナショナルで10日間の労働も。
そしてその後は、スペインに行き、DPワールドツアー（欧州ツアー）のカタルーニャ選手権で1週間、グリーンの硬さやスティンプメータによる速度の測定などのデータ収集をしてきました。

今後の会議と出張
移動制限が強化されたりしなければ、以下の会議に参加する予定です。講演予定もあります。

• 7月10日～15日、国際芝草研究会議 (コペンハーゲン)
• 8月8日～10日、ニュージーランドゴルフカンファレンス＆エキスポ（クライストチャーチ）
• 11月2日～3日、ポルトガル・グリーンキーパー会議（ポルト市）
• 11月15日〜16日、デンマーク・グリーンキーパー教育週間

今年の後半には、日本への出張もあるかもしれないと少し期待しています。

楽天GORAと共同で、コース管理の実際の現場に即した施肥や病害発生リスクのアドバイスを科学的見地から行えるソフトウェア「楽天GORAターフマネジメントサービス」の開発に取り組んでいます。
日本は気温と降水量と日照の関係で、芝草の育成が非常に難しい場所です。それぞれのゴルフ場ごとにアドバイスをすることができたら本当に役立つソフトウェアになると思います。このようなソフトウェアがコース管理の意思決定を補助できるようになることが良いと考えています。

ATC南ショップ
以前、バンコクの北に ATC の研究圃場がありました。2007年、2008年、2009年と、タイに来られた何人かの日本の方にも訪問していただいております。あれと同じようなことをもう一度やることは絶対にないと思います。事業として成り立たないし、自分の時間の使い方として生産性があるとも思えない。

しかし、今は自分の家に小さな芝草コレクションを作っています。興味のある品種をかなりたくさん集めて、その生長特性を観察しています。
何年か前に、ATC はタイ南部の古いゴム園の部分所有者になることができました。今月からそのゴム園で木々の伐採が始まっており、この土地の一部で、また芝草を栽培してみようかという漠然とした計画もあります。第一関門は、雑草をどうするか、これが大問題でしょう！

OM246 分析
前回のニュースレターで、全機物の全量を測定する検査方法として OM246 について触れました。この方法は、個々のグリーンに対して行ったコアリングや目砂の量や効果を、純粋にグリーンごとに評価する方法として特に有効です。
OM246を初めて行った場合は、その結果を有機物の総量の基準値とします。同じ草種の他のグリーンと比較するための基準としても利用することができます。しかし OM246 が真価を発揮するのは2回目以降です。1回目の試験結果と2回目の試験結果との間の有機物の経時変化がレポートとして報告されますので、その変化を、この期間中に実施された保守作業の内容と照らし合わせみることができるのです。そしてこの比較から、その期間に行われたメンテナンス作業が土壌有機物にどのような影響を与えたかを正確に判断することができるのです。

前回のニュースレター以来、このテストをオーストラリア、カナダ、デンマーク、ポルトガル、タイ、アメリカのクライアントのために行いました。日本でも1ヵ所だけですが、この試験を行ったゴルフコースがあります。日本でもこのテストを行うグリーンキーパーが増えることを願っています。分析結果の有用性については充分な自信があります。是非やってみてください。もしかしたら、1、2年後には USGA がこのテストを推奨するようになるのではと期待しています。
このテストを行った後、ATC のクライアントである米国ワシントン州のコースのスーパーインテンデントからこんなメッセージが届きました。「まったく素晴らしい。OM246 こそ、自分がこの仕事を始めて以来ずっと求めていたものだったという気がしています。10年前に戻ってこれができたならなあ という思いがあります。」

I’m writing this from my home office in southern Thailand. It seems that interesting turfgrass observations and events and activities accumulate rapidly with the type of work that I do. It therefore occurred to me that it was about the right time to share some updates with you in another newsletter.
Recent travel
During the pandemic, there have been a few times during which travel within Thailand was restricted, but for most of the past two years it has been possible to travel around Thailand. Crossing the border to come into, Thailand, however, has been a difficult and uncertain and costly matter, and because of those entry restrictions to Thailand, I did not leave Thailand between February 2020—when I returned to Thailand after a trip to Echigo-Yuzawa, Fukuoka, and Tokyo—and March 2022, when I went to Ireland to speak at the Irish greenkeepers conference in Galway.

After Ireland, I took a trip to the USA which included:
• A visit to Brookside Laboratories in Ohio, where ATC sends soil, water, and leaf tissue samples for analysis
• Visits to meet turfgrass researchers at the University of Florida, University of Georgia (Tifton campus), and the University of Tennessee (where I am an adjunct professor)
• Visits to many golf courses to see grass and how it is maintained
• Work for ten days at Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters Tournament
I have also been to Spain, where I spent a week collecting data such as green firmness and stimpmeter measurements at the Catalunya Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour).

Upcoming conferences and travel
Assuming that travel remains possible, I’m scheduled to be speaking at or attending the following conferences:
• July 10 to 15, International Turfgrass Research Conference in Copenhagen
• August 8 to 10, Golf Matters New Zealand Golf Conference & Expo
• November 2 to 3, Portugal greenkeepers conference in Porto
• November 15 to 16, Danish greenkeepers education week
I expect there may be some travel to Japan later this year as well.

ATC South Shop
Some of you came to Thailand for events at the old, no longer extant, ATC research facility north of Bangkok in 2007, 2008, and 2009. I’m never going to do something quite like that again—it’s not a good business and not a productive way for me to spend my time.
But I have re-established a grass collection at home, where I have been growing and observing the growth characteristics of many interesting grasses. A few years ago, ATC was able to acquire a partial interest in an orchard of old rubber trees in southern Thailand. This month logging of those trees commenced, and I have some vague plans to grow a bit of grass on some of this land. I think the main challenge at first is going to be weeds!

OM246 testing
In the last newsletter, I mentioned the OM246 method for testing total organic matter. This is especially useful as a method to assess the amount of coring and sand topdressing done to putting greens, in a perfectly site-specific way. At the first time of OM246 testing, a greenkeeper will be able to get a baseline value for what the total organic material is, and can compare those values to other greens planted to the same species of grass. The real value of this starts at the second time of testing, when the change in organic material over time is reported on the test, and that change can be compared with the maintenance work done during the time interval between the testing events. From this comparison, it’s possible to determine exactly how the maintenance work done during that time period has influenced the soil organic material.
Since the last newsletter, I’ve done this test for clients in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Portugal, Thailand, the USA, and for only one golf course in Japan. I hope more greenkeepers in Japan will start to do this test. I recommend this because I am confident that the test results are useful. I also expect you’ll see the USGA start recommending this test in a year or two. One of my clients in the USA, a superintendent at a course in Washington state, sent me this message after doing this testing: “This is absolutely fascinating stuff. I feel like the OM246 is exactly what I’ve been looking for my entire career. If only I could go back a decade and know where we were with the OM.”
