こんにちは。
前回のアップデートの後、マレーシア、ポルトガル、デンマーク、ニュージーランド、日本へと行って参りました。考えてみるに、こういうチャンスに恵まれるのは信じられないくらいラッキーなことです。おかげで世界中の芝草の研究ができ、芝草を実際に管理している人々と出会え、効果の上がる管理方法を学ぶことができるのですから。こんな楽しいことはありません！
なかでも本当に貴重だったのは、ニュージーランドで、ブラウントップ・ベントグラス（Agrostis capillaris）のグリーンを見る機会を得たことでした。

2025年の ITRC （国際芝草学会）
今年の大会はコペンハーゲンで開かれましたが、以前の大会よりもずっと面白いイベントでした。実は、ITRC への参加は今回が二度目で、前回は 2005 年のウェールズ大会でした。
次の大会は 2025 年。開催地は日本、期間は 7月12日から16日、会場は軽井沢ということで、中々に期待が盛り上がっております。2025年の大会には、海外から多くの芝草研究者が日本を訪れるだろうと思います。日本の芝草産業が世界の注目を集めつつあります。日本の人々、研究者のみならず、サプライヤー、グリーンキーパー、スポーツフィールドの管理者など、さまざまな分野の人々が一人でも多く参加して欲しいです。

今回のコペンハーゲン会議では、まる一日を使った「プラクティショナーズ」セミナーというのがあり、現場で働く人たちのためのセミナーということで、これはチケット完売、満員御礼。空席は一つもなく、左右と後方の壁が立ち見の人々で埋まると言う盛況でした。
実用的な立場からの研究が特に選ばれて発表が行われ、非常に多くのグリーンキーパーやスポーツターフ関係者が参加しておりました。
2025年の軽井沢大会でも同じような企画があるといいと思っています。単なる研究とか学習というのでなく、ターフ管理の現場で働く人々に直接役立つような研究発表が集まったら素晴らしいでしょう。

ウインターターフプロジェクト
コペンハーゲンでは、寒地型芝草の冬のダメージを特に研究している国債プロジェクトである WinterTurf の中心人物たちと食事を共にする機会がありました。彼らによるとこのプロジェクトは、社会環境において重要な地位をしめる芝草の冬期障害についての知見を深め、問題の解決につなげるために農業関連長期共同プロジェクトであるとのこと。
ウインターターフプロジェクトを率いているのはミネソタ大学と、ウィスコンシン・マディソン大学、ミシガン州立大学、マサチューセッツ大学、アイオワ州立大学、オレゴン州立大学、ラトガース大学、ノルウェイ生物経済研究所。そのほか、北米とヨーロッパのゴルフ場スーパーインテンデント数百名が協力しています。

その食事会の席上で、日本の北部のゴルフ場では芝草の低温障害や氷雪害に非常に苦労しているのかという質問を受けました。わたしは「していますよ。北海道はそもそも非常に雪が多いし、山間部や豪雪地帯のゴルフ場では冬期ダメージの問題は大きいです」と答えました。
プロジェクトの研究者からは、日本のゴルフ場が 25 コースくらいプロジェクトに参加してくれると嬉しいという声がきかれました。日本のゴルフ場で、寒地型芝草で、冬期ダメージが問題になるようなコースで、このプロジェクトへの参加にご興味のある方は是非登録してください。
以下のウェブでの登録が難しければ私が登録のお手伝いをします：WinterTurf website。プロジェクトに参加することによる時間的な負担は、あまりありません。冬の到来前に芝の状態が把握できるような写真を提出し、その後は、雪の深さ、芝の上の氷や水たまりの有無を毎週観察記録、翌春に再び芝の状態を示す写真を再度提出するというのが求められる作業です。また、敷地内または近隣の気象観測所からの気象データも提出する必要があります。

11月にはポルトガル、スペイン、デンマークでセミナーを開催する予定です。

Hello,
Since the last update, I’ve traveled to Malaysia, Portugal, Denmark, New Zealand, and Japan. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have these opportunities. I get to study turfgrasses around the world, meet the people maintaining the grasses, and learn about the techniques that are most effective. What fun this is!
One of the really interesting things was seeing browntop bentgrass greens (Agrostis capillaris) in New Zealand.

The ITRC in July 2025
The International Turfgrass Research Conference in Copenhagen was more fun than I had expected. I had only been to one other ITRC, the 2005 conference in Wales. There is a lot of excitement about the upcoming 2025 ITRC, to be hosted by Japan and to be held in Karuizawa on July 12 to 16, 2025. I expect the 2025 conference will have a large attendance because many turfgrass researchers from around the world are excited to visit Japan and to learn more about the turfgrass industry in Japan. I will encourage everyone from the Japanese turfgrass industry, including researchers, suppliers, greenkeepers, and sports field managers, to attend this conference if you can.
There was a full day “practitioners” seminar at the recent conference in Copenhagen, and this was a sold out session, held in a room that had all the seats filled and people standing around the sides and at the back of the room. A selection of practical research papers were chosen for presentation in this session, and many greenkeepers and sports turf managers attended the conference on this day. I expect there will be a similar session at Karuizawa in 2025, with selected research that is especially applicable to people who are managing turf, and not just studying it.

WinterTurf project
I had dinner in Copenhagen with researchers who are leading WinterTurf, an international project studying winter damage on cool-season turf. They describe the project as:
The long-term goal of this coordinated agricultural project is to better understand turfgrass winter stresses and then identify solutions to this important specialty crop problem.
The WinterTurf project is led by the University of Minnesota, in collaboration with University of Wisconsin-Madison, Michigan State University, University of Massachusetts, Iowa State University, Oregon State University, Rutgers University, Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research, and hundreds of golf course superintendents across North America and Europe.
At that afore-mentioned dinner, I was asked if golf courses in northern Japan had to deal with much winter damage, ice, and snow. “Yes,” I replied, “there is a lot of snow in Hokkaido and in the mountains, and the courses there often have to deal with possible winter damage.”
The WinterTurf researchers would like to have about 25 golf courses from Japan as participants in this project. If your course is at risk of winter damage on cool-season turf, you can register your interest in participating in this project at the WinterTurf website, or contact me and I can help you register. There’s not much of a time burden for participants. You’ll need to submit pre-winter photos to assess turf condition going into winter, then weekly updates of snow depth, presence or absence of standing water or ice on the turf, and then photos again in spring that show the extent of winter damage, if any. Weather data from an onsite or nearby weather station will also be submitted.
